About HAVA

What is HAVA?

HAVA, the Harbor Association of Volunteers for Animals, is an all-volunteer group serving the animals of the Twin Harbors region of Washington state. The area we cover stretches roughly from Westport in the north to Bay Center in the south. It encompasses portions of Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties.

HAVA's Philosophy:

A shelter is a safe haven -- not a last stop before death

HAVA was founded in Westport, Washington, by Shirley Brown, and operated for many years with a dedicated crew of volunteers. Following Shirley's retirement, HAVA went into a brief period of diminished activity. With the help of loving hearts old and new, the group was re-formed and is based in Raymond, Washington -- with volunteers in Westport, Grayland, Tokeland, Raymond, South Bend, Menlo, Bay Center and other communities.

How can you help HAVA help the animals?
Volunteer! Donate money! Donate animal-care supplies. Anything to help the lost, abused, or unwanted animals of the Harbors.

What does HAVA do?
HAVA's long-term mission includes:

  • Care and find homes for animals
  • Continuing to maintain our low-cost spay-neuter program
  • Maintaining our trap-neuter-release program for feral cats
  • Maintaining an emergency medical fund for stray animals in need of health care

We continue to place animals in loving homes. To provide for those animals before adoption, we have built a volunteer foster-care network for dogs, cats, and other small animals. We also run a lost & found registry, and our long-time volunteers feed and care for several colonies of feral cats, including the well-known "Jetty Cats" of the beach community of Westport.

In 2010 HAVA funded 282 cat spay/neuters and 37 dog spay/neuters. We fostered and found homes for 108 cats and kittens, and fostered and found homes for 11 dogs. HAVA tries to cover all of its costs through fundraisers, such as the sale of Happy Tails calendars, Pet Pics with Santa, and, most importantly, through donations from concerned and caring people like you. In 2010 our expenses exceeded our income by over $3,500. We are concerned about our ability to help animals in 2011 and beyond. Please help by becoming a member or making a donation. The rewards for joining will be an invitation to the annual general membership meeting, voting rights, a newsletter, and most importantly that feel-good feeling of knowing that you are helping HAVA help the homeless animals, the well-loved animals in low-income homes to lead happy and healthy lives, and keeping stray cats and dogs from reproducing and bringing kittens and puppies into the hard life of a homeless animal. THANK YOU
